creating community through the arts

Culture Days Panel Info

Meet the panelists and community artists who will be participating in our event on September 25:
"Community and Art Throughout Our Lives: Learning, Living and Remembering".

LYLE POVAH - Rhythms for a Passionate Heart
With a special interest in African drumming, Lyle is a pioneering musician/educator, particularly in the areas of health and creativity, leadership, community building, eating disorders, autism and intergenerational learning. Over a number of decades, he has studied and performed worldwide bringing musical fun, wellness and learning to a wide variety of musical arenas.

CARLA BERGMAN - Purple Thistle
Co-director of The Purple Thistle Centre, Carla Bergman strives to empower and actively radicalize youth with the hope of challenging norms around consumerism, schooling, and success. In 2007 with a few other adults and youth, Carla created RAI.N Zine, an all-ages anthology zine and radical art project.

ARLIN FFRENCH - Purple Thistle
Tattooist at Pennyblack Tattoo, a practicing/exhibiting artist and an avid cyclist, Arlin Ffrench is also heavily involved with activist groups putting time and energy into making a better life for everyone. Working with The Purple Thistle Centre and R.A.I.N. Zine, Arlin has been a mentor, student, friend and ally.

MARINA SZJIARTO - Mountain View Cemetery
Vancouver-based Visual and Celebration Artist, Marina Szjiarto has been exploring the artist's role in rites of passage for the last 12 years. She has pioneered the use of Shrines to honour the dead in community events and is the Artistic Director All Souls event at Mountain View Cemetery since its inception 6 years ago.

GLEN HODGES - Mountain View Cemetery
In 2002 Glen left his prairie roots and took on the challenge of reopening and redeveloping Vancouver's historic Mountain View Cemetery. The changes were manifested physically in the construction of three new modern west coast buildings and the unique columbaria and surrounding landscape enhancements. However, some of the most transformative changes he has introduced are related to redefining the broader role of the cemetery in the community: as an important place for the living, a place where historical cultures and traditions are honoured and expanded to create new ones, where artists are integral to honouring and paying tribute to our ancestors, and where common cemetery practices are challenged and sustainable cemetery practices are encouraged.

MELANIE SCHAMBACH - Community Artist
Born and raised in Colombia and Guatemala, and later moving to Canada, Melanie Schambach explores interdisciplinary arts processes that encourages participants to nurture their voices, open dialogue, and think critically on social justice issues relevant to their communities.
